Jeff Koons (born 1955) is an American artist known for his reproductions of banal objects, such as “Balloon animals” (1994-2000) produced in stainless steel with mirror finish surfaces. Critics are sharply divided in their views of Koons, some believe him as a pioneering artist for media-saturated era and others simply dismiss his work as kitsch. First noticed for early conceptual sculpture, such as “The New” (1981-87) a series of vacuum-cleaners in illuminated Perspex boxes, Koons made mainstream headlines with the explicitly sexual photo series “Made in Heaven” (1990-91), with Italian porn star Ilona Staller. He also lost a court battle for copyright infringement, pertaining to his 1988 series “Banality”.
