Jasper Johns, Jr. (born 1930) is an American artist best known for his “Flag” (1954-55) painting. Johns plays with contradictions and ironies, appropriating popular iconography as subject matter, in opposition to Abstract Expressionist figures who simply indexical paintings, in that they stand effectively as a signature on canvas. When Willem de Kooning first commented on his work with his comment: “That son of a bitch, You could give him two cans of beer and he could sell them.” this became the perfect pretext to expend his production in sculpture, with “Ballantine Ale Cans” (1960).
