Greg Colson is an American artist born in Seatlle, 1956. He is best known for his wall sculptures constructed of salvaged materials. One iconic series is entitled “Stick Maps”, outlining the street of Cleveland, San Jose, and more with found lengths of various materials like ski poles, curtain rods, plastic plumbing pipe, wood molding. These structures become a portrait of the cities, from the detritus that abound from each one. Another series of constructed “Pie Chart” paintings, mocking the deluge of data analysis with a retro, commercial signage style to such a degree that any actual analytical relevance is co-opted. Colson’s combination of modesty and grandiosity, of mental exactness and physical imprecision often seem to scrutinize the conflict between the active center and deserted margins of industrialized society
