Claire Fontaine

Claire Fontaine is a Paris-based art collective founded in 2004. Declaring themselves as “readymade artists" they often produce neo-conceptual art to look like other people's work. They describe their practice as an interrogation on the political impotence and the crisis of singularity that today define contemporary art. Claire Fontaine uses the brashness of youth culture to make terrorist-like actions within high-end galleries, such as subverting self-defence videos into extreme violence (“Abstraction=Violence”, 2011), burning wall signs made of matches, in the shape of nation states (“France (burnt/unburnt)”, 2011) or the sleeve cover of a Guy Debord book (“Society of the Spectacle Brickbat”, 2006) rolled around a brick, as if ready to throw into a window.
