Barbara Kruger (born 1945) is an American conceptual artist. Much of her work consists of merging found photographs with pithy and aggressive captions to address issues of feminism, power and control via techniques of mass communication and advertising. Many of her billboard-sized slogans have come to encapsulate 80s art production, from “I shop therefore I am” (1987) to “Your body is a battleground" (1989), the latter produced in support of legal abortion. Although her appropriation of pictures caused some legal skirmishes with photographers, she has always escaped charges of infringement by pleading for freedom of expression.
